On their way back to Labuan Bajo, Hanna, Encik, and Markus stopped at the restaurant La Cucina Ruteng. There, they met the owners, Luigi and Dana, who gave us a warm welcome and with whom we struck up a conversation about coffee.
Later, Markus had the idea of hosting a coffee event at one of the restaurants in Labuan Bajo—La Cucina Komodo, Burger Time, or Alma Restaurant Komodo. He put the idea in writing and asked Dana if it could take place at Alma Restaurant. Dana put them in touch with Maria, the manager of Alma Restaurant. Maria welcomed the idea, and later Christa and Markus visited Maria at the restaurant to introduce themselves and explain the idea for the event.
Then, Christa, David, Hanna, Markus came together and spoke about coffee talk event. The event was then prepared and refined step by step. A tasting of 4 different coffee varieties using two brewing methods: V60 pour-over and French press. This will be accompanied by a presentation on the origins and current status of KAFFEEkostbar in Germany and Labuan Bajo. For each coffee tasted, the coffee farmer should be introduced, and the coffee variety and processing methods discussed. Topics such as green coffee procurement for the 2024 harvest, the Two Kings Principle, and God’s justice should also be addressed. A total of 8 sessions were scheduled: Friday, Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday, from 10 to 11 a.m. and 2 to 3 p.m. each day. The price per participant was set to Rp 125,000 to cover the costs for the coffee, the flyer, a small honorary and the provision for Alma (Rp 10,000 per participant). For every packet of coffee beans sold, Alma should receive Rp 5,000.
Christa created the flyer, which was later handed out at restaurants, hostels, and on the street. There were no participants on the first three days, or rather, during the first six sessions. On the last day, two of Hanna's friends took part in the event. The coffee talk with the two guests went very pleasantly and gives confidence for future events of this kind.
On behalf of KAFFEEkostbar Labuan Bajo, We would like to thank the Alma Restaurant for giving us this opportunity and everyone who opened this door for us.
